Fix internet connection problems

If you see the message “Connected, No Internet” or “Limited or No Connectivity”, this tutorial will help you restore your WiFi or Ethernet connection. There are many possible causes, so several solutions exist—but the steps below can solve most internet connection issues.

Single Symptom, Multiple Causes

You may have experienced your internet connection being blocked, even though your tablet or smartphone connects to the same network. Causes include Windows misconfigurations, Windows updates, modem settings, or incompatibilities between your modem and your PC.

These errors can appear whether you use Ethernet or WiFi. In WiFi, issues often come from an invalid security key or unsupported encryption, but Windows won’t always tell you this clearly.

Table of Contents

1. Check the WiFi security key
2. Change WiFi encryption type
3. Enable DHCP service
4. Disable WPS
5. Update network drivers
6. Windows 10 WiFi bug patch
7. Configure a static IP address (WiFi & Ethernet)
8. DNS issues
9. Driver issue
10. Modem and PC incompatibility

Important!

To access your modem’s admin interface for WiFi issues, connect via Ethernet or another device. Then follow the steps below to fix WiFi or Ethernet “Limited Connectivity” problems.

Access Windows Network Settings

Open Windows Settings → Network & Internet. You can also press Windows Key + I. The Control Panel also allows access to network settings in Windows 10 or 11.

1. Check the WiFi Security Key

Your limited connectivity may be caused by an incorrect WiFi key. Some Windows versions don’t clearly indicate this, resulting in “Connected, No Internet”.

Solution: Disconnect from WiFi, then reconnect with the correct key:

1. Open the Network icon in the taskbar
2. Right-click your WiFi connection → click Forget
3. Click Connect and enter the security key

Where to find the WiFi key: Usually on the label or the display of your modem. View : How to get my wifi password ?

2. Change WiFi Encryption Type

Some older PCs cannot support the latest WiFi encryption (WPA2 AES, WPA3). Reducing encryption to WPA TKIP or WEP can solve connectivity issues.

  • Use your modem’s admin interface to lower encryption level

  • Generate a new WiFi key and enter it in Windows

WiFi encryption types (from least to most secure):

  • WEP

  • WPA-PSK [TKIP]

  • WPA-PSK [AES]

  • WPA2-PSK [AES]

  • WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

  • WPA3 (new, not yet universal)

If your PC is older and the modem uses new encryption, consider using a USB WiFi adapter (e.g., TP-Link AC600, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz).

3. Enable DHCP

DHCP automatically assigns IP addresses. If disabled, connectivity issues can occur:

  • Access your modem admin interface → check DHCP enabled

  • Restart modem if you changed settings

4. Disable WPS

WPS can cause connection problems. Disable WPS in your modem interface, then test WiFi connection.

5. Update Network Drivers

Old or generic drivers may prevent WiFi connection:

1. Check your network card model in Control Panel → Device Manager → Network Adapters
2. Download latest driver from manufacturer site
3. Optionally uninstall old driver before installing new

6. Windows 10 WiFi Bug

Some Windows updates caused WiFi connection failures.

  • Check for required patches via Windows Update or Microsoft Catalog

  • Ensure your OS is 32-bit or 64-bit before installing patches

  • If patches fail, move to static IP configuration

7. Configure a Static IP

If DHCP and other solutions fail:

1. Open Control Panel → Network & Internet → Network and Sharing Center → Change adapter settings
2. Right-click your connection → Properties → Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
3. Select Use the following IP address and Use the following DNS server

Example settings (adjust to your network):

    • IP: 192.168.1.10 (choose 10–20)

    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    • Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    • Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1

    • Alternate DNS: 8.8.8.8

4. Save and reactivate network adapter

8. DNS Issues

Flush and reset DNS:

ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh winhttp reset proxy
netsh winhttp reset tracing
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset all
netsh int ipv4 reset catalog
netsh int ipv6 reset catalog

Restart PC and modem.

9. Driver issue

An internet connection problem can also be caused by the network card driver. The driver may be too old, or it may have been automatically replaced by Windows (via Windows Update) while trying to help. In that case, you need to restore the previous driver.

To change or manage a device driver in Windows, use the Device Manager. Ideally, you should look up the ID (identifier) of the WiFi card or Ethernet card, then search for it on Google or, even better, on the computer manufacturer’s website.

If Windows replaced the driver automatically, go to Device Manager → Network adapters → Network card → Driver → Roll Back Driver.

10. Modem-PC Incompatibility

  • Old PC + new modem: encryption mismatch

  • Old modem + new PC: encryption may be too new

Solution: Use a modern USB WiFi adapter or adjust modem encryption.

Extra: WiFi 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

  • 2.4 GHz: more stable, less speed (450–600 Mbps)

  • 5 GHz: faster (up to 1300 Mbps), less range

Check PC compatibility via Device Manager → Advanced → Wireless Mode. Check modem WiFi settings via admin interface.

Conclusion

Following this guide resolves most “Connected, No Internet” or “Limited Connectivity” issues. If none work, restart your modem or use an external USB WiFi adapter (TP-Link AC600 recommended, supports 2.4/5 GHz dual-band).
