1. Common causes
Several factors can explain why a smartphone overheats. In most cases, it is caused by heavy usage or a software-related issue.
The most common causes include :
prolonged use of games or resource-heavy applications
exposing the phone to direct sunlight
too many apps running in the background
a system update in progress
fast charging or charging with a non-official cable
an aging battery
All of these situations place a heavy load on the processor and battery, causing the smartphone’s temperature to rise. When several of these factors occur at the same time, the device can overheat, which may trigger an automatic safety shutdown or lead to bugs, slowdowns, and freezes. For example, using your phone as a GPS, while it is charging and exposed to direct sunlight on a car dashboard, is a classic situation where overheating is almost inevitable.

Checking battery usage data allows you to quickly identify the apps responsible.
2. Applications
Certain apps are especially resource-intensive, including mobile games, streaming services, and some social media applications. If your phone becomes warm or overheats frequently, it is worth checking which apps are using the most battery power, which ones are running in the background, and whether any app updates are currently being downloaded or installed. In some cases, a poorly optimized app can place a constant strain on the device and cause ongoing overheating. Likewise, keeping too many apps open in the background can increase the workload on the processor and contribute to higher temperatures.
3. Possible hardware problem
If your phone overheats frequently, the cause may not be software-related but instead linked to a hardware problem. While it is normal for a smartphone to become slightly warm during charging, excessive heat is not normal and may indicate a faulty or aging battery that should be inspected by a professional repair technician.
Other common hardware-related causes include a worn-out battery, an incompatible or low-quality charger, processor-related issues, or simply an older device struggling to handle the demands of modern applications. If your phone becomes extremely hot even when it is not being used, it is advisable to have the battery tested and, if necessary, consider repairing or replacing the device.
My Charger Gets Very Hot
If it’s your smartphone charger that heats up, that is fairly normal. However, you should still be able to hold it in your hand. If the charger becomes burning hot, that is not normal. It may be of poor quality or reaching the end of its life, which can be dangerous.
In that case, unplug it immediately and replace it with a new charger. Generic chargers can be fine, but avoid very cheap models. As often mentioned on Premiers Clics, good-quality generic products do exist.
4. Solutions to cool down your Smartphone
Fortunately, there are several simple and effective ways to prevent your smartphone from overheating. To keep temperatures under control, close unnecessary applications, remove the phone case while charging, and avoid leaving the device in direct sunlight. It is also a good idea to disable Bluetooth, GPS, or Wi-Fi when they are not needed, restart the phone regularly (usually by holding the Power and Volume Up buttons), and make sure the operating system and apps are up to date. These simple measures can reduce the workload on the processor, improve overall performance, and help extend the lifespan of the battery.
Conclusion
An overheating phone is not always a sign of a serious problem. In most cases, overheating comes from heavy usage, resource-intensive apps, or battery issues. By following a few good practices and monitoring your apps’ usage, you can easily reduce overheating and extend the lifespan of your smartphone.
