Difficulty : Easy

Smartphones common issues - Tips for Android Mobile and iPhone

Are you experiencing sound issues with your smartphone? The problem is often caused by incorrect volume settings or a clogged speaker.

Problème de téléphone qui ne charge pas. Solutions faciles.

Fix Sound or Volume Issues

A very low sound level on a smartphone can quickly become annoying, especially for calls, videos, or listening to music. In some cases, it even becomes difficult to hear the person you are speaking with or an important notification.

This problem can have several causes. It may simply be a volume setting issue, a clogged speaker, or a software bug. In rarer cases, a hardware failure can also be responsible.

In this article, we’ll look at the most common causes of low sound on a phone and the possible solutions to restore a normal volume level.

Table of Contents

  1. Clogged Speaker
  2. Incorrect Volume Settings
    3. Software Bug or Application Issue
    4. Damage Speaker

1. Clogged Speaker

The most common cause of low sound on a smartphone is a clogged speaker (note that some smartphones have two speakers).

Over time, dust, lint, and other small particles can accumulate in the speaker grille.

This buildup prevents the sound from coming out properly and can significantly reduce the volume. The problem often appears when the phone is regularly carried in a pocket, bag, or dusty environment. The same goes for jacket or pants pockets — a very common situation.

In many cases, carefully cleaning the speaker grille with a soft brush or compressed air can immediately improve the sound level.

Personally, I prefer using a vacuum cleaner to remove dust rather than compressed air, which may push particles deeper inside the device.

A small needle can also help unclog the grille protecting the speakers. This is also useful for the microphone. If people cannot hear you or hear you poorly during calls, the problem likely comes from dirt blocking the microphone.

All of this is often related to lack of device maintenance.

How many speakers does my smartphone have?

On some phones, especially entry-level or older models, there is only one speaker. It is usually located at the bottom of the phone near the charging port.

This speaker is used to play sound from videos, music, games, and sometimes speakerphone calls.

2. Incorrect Volume Settings

This is another very common situation.

A poorly configured volume setting can also explain very low sound. Modern smartphones (2026, 2025, 2024…) have multiple independent volume levels, including:

  • Calls

  • Media

  • Notifications

  • Alarms

It is therefore possible that the call volume or media volume is set very low without the user realizing it.

Some modes such as Silent Mode or Do Not Disturb can also reduce phone sounds. This is an important point to check, especially since accidental changes are common with touchscreen devices.

Understanding smartphone volume management in 2026

Checking the audio settings often solves this type of problem quickly.

For example, on a Samsung smartphone, press VOL+ or VOL- to display the main volume (calls). Then tap the three small dots (...) to show all volume controls. You can adjust them individually:

  • System

  • Notifications

  • AI Assistant

  • Ringtone

  • Media (videos or music)

So there isn’t just one volume control on your device. It’s very convenient, but it needs to be properly configured.

3. Software Bug or Application Issue

Less common, but still possible.

A system bug or an application can also cause sound levels to drop. After a system update or installing a new app, some audio settings may be modified or incorrectly interpreted by the system.

In these situations, simply restarting the smartphone can sometimes fix the issue.

Checking for system updates or removing a recently installed app may also restore normal functionality.

4. Damage Speaker

If the phone speaker is damaged, the volume may become very low or the sound may be distorted.

A fall, water exposure, or normal component wear can cause this type of failure.

Unlike configuration or software problems, this issue usually requires hardware repair. Replacing the speaker by a professional will restore normal sound levels.

Conclusion

Low sound on a smartphone can have several causes, but it is often a simple problem to fix. In most cases, the issue is caused by a clogged speaker or incorrect volume settings. Before considering a repair, it is recommended to:

  • check the audio settings

  • clean the speaker grille

If the problem persists after these checks, a software bug or a faulty speaker may be responsible. In that case, a professional diagnosis can identify the exact cause and restore proper sound on your phone.
